Gunilla Källenius is a Senior Professor in Clinical Microbiology at the Department of Medicine, Solna, Karolinska Institutet. Her research focuses on tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics, vaccine development, and host-pathogen interactions. She graduated as a medical doctor from Uppsala University (1970) and earned a Ph.D. from Karolinska Institutet (1981). Her work includes groundbreaking studies on Escherichia coli virulence factors and Mycobacterium tuberculosis glycolipids like lipoarabinomannan (LAM).
Key research areas include:
- Development of urinary LAM-based TB diagnostics
- Carbohydrate-conjugate vaccines targeting TB glycolipids
- Host immune responses in latent vs. active TB
- Molecular epidemiology of bovine TB in Africa
Her lab collaborates with global teams on projects like the ERASE-TB cohort study and explores mechanisms of immunological tolerance to mycobacterial glycolipids. She leads the 'Inflammation and immune regulation during infection' team under Christopher Sundling and the 'Global infections' group led by Anna Färnert.
Recent work highlights include identifying protein signatures for active TB diagnosis and advancing LAM detection technologies. Her research bridges microbiology, immunology, and clinical translation to combat TB globally.
