Gumersindo Feijoo

Prof. Gumersindo Feijoo is a Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), affiliated with the Department of Chemical Engineering and the School of Engineering. His academic career spans over three decades, including postdoctoral research at Wageningen Agricultural University (Netherlands) and the University of Arizona (USA). He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from USC (1994) and has served as faculty since 1991, progressing through ranks of Research Fellow, Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor since 2008.

His research focuses on bioprocess engineering, bioremediation, life cycle assessment (LCA), and sustainable biorefinery systems. Key areas include microbial enzyme systems for pollutant degradation, eco-design, and waste valorization. He leads major projects such as BIORECER (EU-funded certification schemes for bioresources) and NEPTUNUS (water-energy-seafood nexus strategies). He has supervised over 10 doctoral and 18 master’s theses, with students like Cristina Cambeses and Jorge González-Rodríguez addressing topics like diet sustainability and photocatalytic wastewater treatment.

Feijoo has authored >130 publications, including high-impact articles on circular biofuel systems and LCA frameworks. Notable awards include the Mother Earth Award for lifetime contributions to environmental recovery and recognition for projects like Pescaenverde and Aquaenvec. His work integrates environmental, economic, and social dimensions, emphasizing policy alignment and cross-sectoral innovation.

He teaches courses on mass/energy balances, chemical reaction engineering, and eco-design at both undergraduate and master’s levels. Current projects address bio-based certification, green logistics, and zero-emission cities. His lab develops technologies like magnetic nanoparticle reactors for pollutant removal, enhancing industrial sustainability.
