Gumersindo Feijoo Costa

Prof. Gumersindo Feijoo is a Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), affiliated with the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Higher Technical School of Engineering. He leads research in bioprocess engineering, bioremediation, and sustainability assessment, focusing on wastewater treatment, biofuel production, and circular economy strategies. His work integrates life cycle assessment (LCA) and eco-design principles to evaluate environmental impacts and promote sustainable technologies. Feijoo holds a PhD from USC (1994) and completed postdoctoral research at Wageningen Agricultural University (Netherlands) and the University of Arizona (USA).

• Education: Degree in Chemistry (1985–1990), MSc (1990), and PhD (1994) in Chemical Engineering from USC.
• Research: Specializes in bioremediation using white-rot fungi, enzymatic reactor systems, and sustainable biorefinery models. Current projects include the BIORECER initiative for biological resource certifications and the NEPTUNUS project on seafood sustainability.
• Awards: Includes the Mother Earth Award (2019) and recognition for the Pescaenverde and Aquaenvec environmental projects.
• Grants & Contracts: Leads European and national projects totaling over €500,000, focusing on green logistics, zero-emission cities, and bio-based value chains.

Feijoo’s teaching spans undergraduate and graduate programs in Chemical Engineering, emphasizing mass balances, reaction engineering, and eco-efficiency. He advises doctoral and master’s students on topics like LCA of wastewater systems, eco-labeling, and dietary sustainability.

His lab, part of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Environmental Technologies (CRETUS), collaborates internationally on projects addressing water-energy-food nexus challenges and biorefinery sustainability.
