Guisen Zhao is a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shandong University. He has served in this role since 2001 and directs the Drug Discovery Laboratory. Previously, he held academic positions at Shandong Medical University from 1983 to 2001, including Associate Professor (1997-2001) and Lecturer (1983-1996). Zhao completed his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Shandong University in 2006, an MSc in Pharmacy at Shandong Medical University (1988-1991), and a BSc in Pharmacy there in 1983.

His research focuses on rational design and synthesis of anticancer agents targeting GSTP1-1, AKT, and androgen receptor pathways, as well as HIV-1 integrase inhibitors for anti-AIDS therapy. His publications (15 most recent) span Medicinal Chemistry, Oncology, and Virology, with subfields including structure-activity relationship, chemical synthesis, and mechanism studies.
Guisen Zhao has secured multiple research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Shandong Provincial Natural Science Foundation. He previously worked as a Visiting Scientist at The University of Iowa (1998-1999) and a Senior Visiting Fellow at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (2011).
As Director of the Drug Discovery Laboratory, he leads projects in drug development for cancer and viral diseases. His teaching portfolio includes Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Design and Discovery, and Chemical Biology.
