Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez

Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez is a Professor and Associate Dean of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences (ALES), Department of Renewable Resources. He holds a B.Sc. from EARTH University (Costa Rica) and a Ph.D. from Purdue University (USA), with a professional agrologist (P.Ag.) designation in Alberta. His career spans roles at institutions like Plant & Food Research (New Zealand), the University of Panama, and the USDA–ARS National Lab for Agriculture and Environment.

Research focuses on soil fertility, sustainable land management, and greenhouse gas mitigation in agroecosystems. His group investigates carbon/nitrogen/water dynamics, climate change adaptation, and resilient agricultural practices. The group includes 5 doctoral students, 5 master's students, and international collaborators from over 20 countries.

Key academic awards include the NACTA Educator Award, Rutherford Award for Teaching Excellence, Humboldt Fellowship, and ASTech Innovation Award.
