He joined ISU in 2017 as part of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) and holds affiliations with the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE). - Education: PhD and MESc in Environmental Economics from Yale University (2017, 2011), MBA from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (2002).
- Key Research Themes: Climate change impacts on agriculture, sustainable farming practices, market instruments for forest conservation, and the economic implications of agricultural intensification.
His work bridges theory and practice, analyzing case studies in Brazil and Iowa. Recent studies include nitrogen management under climate extremes, bundled contracts in soybean adoption, and farmer networks for pest control. His findings inform policy debates on balancing agricultural productivity with environmental sustainability.
Dr. DePaula’s research has explored Brazil’s agricultural boom, linking infrastructure development to soybean competitiveness, and quantifying climate vulnerability across regions. He emphasizes data-driven solutions for global challenges like deforestation and food security.
