Gui-Qiang George Chen is a Statutory Professor in the Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (PDE Chair) and Professorial Fellow of Keble College at the University of Oxford. He also serves as Director of the Oxford Centre for Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (OxPDE) and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in PDEs. Previously, he held academic positions at Northwestern University (Associate Professor 1994–96, Full Professor 1996–2009, Adjunct Professor 2010–present) and the University of Chicago (Assistant Professor 1989–94).
- Education:
- B.Sc. in Mathematics, Fudan University (Shanghai)
- Ph.D. in Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Beijing, 1987)
- Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (NYU, 1987–89)
His research focuses on nonlinear PDEs, nonlinear analysis, and their applications to mathematics and science, including hyperbolic conservation laws, nonlinear waves, free boundary problems, geometric problems, stochastic PDEs, measure-theoretical analysis, weak convergence methods, and entropy analysis. His work bridges theoretical analysis with practical applications in mathematical physics and numerical analysis.
He has received numerous honors, including the 2024 Pólya Prize by the London Mathematical Society, Fellowships from the European Academy of Sciences (2020), American Mathematical Society (2017), and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2012). Additional awards include the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2009) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Award in Mathematics (1988).
Chen has supervised over 30 PhD/DPhil students and 25 postdoctoral researchers. He has served on more than 15 editorial boards of leading scientific journals and organized over 200 international conferences since 1990. His scholarly output includes over 200 research papers and 10 research books.
