Guglielmo Barone is a Full Professor of Political Economy at the University of Bologna's Department of Economic Sciences. He previously held roles as Associate Professor at the University of Bologna (2020–2023) and University of Padua (2019–2020), and spent 15 years as an economist at the Bank of Italy (2004–2019). He is the department's delegate for third mission activities.
Barone holds a PhD in Statistics from the University of Bologna (2004) and was a visiting scholar at the NBER (2012). His research focuses on Italy's economic growth challenges over the past 30 years, emphasizing competition in markets, regional disparities, public sector efficiency, and political economy. He employs modern microeconometric techniques for causal analysis.
He has consulted for the European Commission and a banking foundation, and occasionally writes for Il Foglio. His work spans topics like intergenerational mobility, banking competition, and the impact of place-based policies. His research often integrates historical case studies with contemporary economic analysis.
