Dr. Grigor Khachatryan serves as Associate Professor of Piano at Concordia College, concurrently holding leadership roles as Chair of the Keyboard Area and Director of the Annual Concordia Piano Festival. An internationally acclaimed artist, he was featured as cover artist for International Piano magazine following critical success of his Albany Records CD "Spirit of Freedom." His Carnegie Hall debut was presented by the Armenian General Benevolent Union of New York City.
Educational background includes bachelor's, master's, and performer diploma degrees from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music under Luba Edlina-Dubinsky, culminating in a doctorate in Piano Performance, Composition, and Music Theory. During graduate studies, he served as junior faculty of piano while developing his artistic identity.
His research centers on integrating traditional Classical forms with late Romantic and 20th-century eclectic styles, particularly through original piano sonatas expressing Armenian patriotic themes. The "Spirit of Freedom" sonatas demonstrate technical mastery of polyrhythms and dynamic contrasts, blending structural integrity with atmospheric expression. Critics note his avoidance of minimalist/avant-garde techniques in favor of "broad, generous phrases" rooted in Romantic traditions.
Honors include a First Prize in an unspecified competition (cited by Times Mail) and cover feature in Fanfare magazine for his critically acclaimed recording. Reviews consistently highlight his "forcefully confident execution" (Fanfare) and ability to create "riveting" works that merge "art, history, and legend" (Fanfare).
As Director of the Concordia Piano Festival, he shapes institutional programming while maintaining active performance and recording schedules. His creative output bridges academic rigor and public engagement through annual festival leadership and commercial CD releases.
