Gretchen Hofmann is a Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She leads the Hofmann Lab, dedicated to understanding how marine organisms respond to global environmental changes such as ocean warming, acidification, and marine heatwaves. Her work integrates physiological, genomic, and ecological approaches to address species' distribution patterns and adaptation mechanisms.
Research in her lab focuses on key areas including macrophysiology, environmental genomics, and transgenerational plasticity in marine species like corals, sea urchins, and Antarctic pteropods. Projects explore how organisms adapt to environmental extremes, with a particular emphasis on temperature and carbonate chemistry changes. The lab employs advanced techniques such as DNA microarrays, transcriptomics, and biomimetic sensors to study these processes.
Notable projects include investigations into the genetic and epigenetic responses of marine organisms to stressors, the role of parental thermal history on progeny resilience, and the ecological implications of coastal marine heatwaves. Hofmann also contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives like the California Current Acidification Network and collaborates on education programs such as the FUErTE (Field-based Undergraduate Engagement through Research, Teaching, and Education) initiative.
Her lab’s research has led to significant insights into the mechanisms of climate adaptation and the importance of considering transgenerational effects in conservation strategies. Hofmann’s work bridges basic science and applied conservation, aiming to inform policies and management practices for vulnerable marine ecosystems.
