Gretchen Bauer is a Professor of Political Science & International Relations at the University of Delaware, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on women's political leadership in Africa, particularly in Ghana and West Africa, addressing topics such as parliamentary representation, gender quotas, and democratization. She has held visiting roles at institutions including the University of Botswana and the University of Ghana, and served as Fulbright Scholar (2016) and senior fellow at MIASA (2019–2023). Bauer led the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Mandela Washington Fellowship program from 2014–2018 and has held leadership roles in the African Studies Association (Vice President, President, and Past President from 2022–2025).
Her academic training includes a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1994). Research interests include African comparative politics, gender dynamics in governance, and the intersection of electoral systems with women’s political participation. She has contributed to policy discussions on gender parity in cabinets and parliaments, with a focus on institutional reforms and cultural barriers.
Publications span edited volumes and peer-reviewed articles analyzing women’s political trajectories in Ghana, Botswana, Namibia, and across West Africa. Her work often combines qualitative and quantitative methods to explore themes like electoral financing, primary reforms, and the legacies of colonial and post-colonial governance structures. Bauer’s research highlights the complexities of achieving gender equality in political spheres amid socio-cultural and institutional challenges.
