Gregory Vercellotti is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota, where he has conducted research for over 40 years. His work focuses on inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular biology, and sickle cell disease (SCD), with notable contributions to understanding how hemolysis contributes to vaso-occlusion in SCD and the protective roles of heme oxygenase-1 and carbon monoxide.
Research Interests:
- Pathologic role of hemolysis in SCD
- Detoxification of heme via heme oxygenase-1
- Anti-inflammatory effects of carbon monoxide
- TLR4 signaling in innate immune activation
- Gene therapy using Sleeping Beauty transposons
- Innovative models for measuring vaso-occlusion
Collaborations: Long-standing collaboration with the Belcher Lab since the 1990s to study SCD and vascular biology.
