Gregory Pflugfelder

Gregory Pflugfelder is an Associate Professor at Columbia University within the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures. He is based in 408 Kent Hall and holds office hours on Tuesdays from 4:00–5:30 PM on a walk-in basis, with appointments available via Zoom. His academic work spans Japanese history and gender studies, informed by interdisciplinary methodologies.

Gregory specializes in Early-Modern and Modern Japanese History, with a focus on Gender, Sexuality, and Visual Culture. His research explores the historical construction of masculinities, the history of the body, and cultural representations of monstrosity in Japan. His publications reflect these themes, blending historical analysis with critical gender and sexuality studies.

His scholarly output demonstrates a sustained engagement with Japanese gender systems, queer history, and the interplay between cultural narratives and political structures. Notably, his work has been recognized with the Yamakawa Kikue Prize (1986).
