Gregory M. Green is a Sofja Kovalevskaja Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany. His research focuses on Galactic structure and dynamics, interstellar dust mapping, and gravitational potential analysis using large astronomical datasets. He earned his PhD in Astronomy from Harvard University in 2016, where he developed 3D dust maps using stellar photometry. Before MPIA, he held postdoctoral positions at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (Stanford) and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (Humboldt Postdoc).
His work leverages surveys like Gaia, SDSS, and DECaPS to study Milky Way structure. Key contributions include the Bayestar 3D dust map and the DECaPS survey, which map dust extinction and stellar kinematics. He also applies Bayesian inference and machine learning to analyze complex astrophysical data.
Green has received the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award (2020) and contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed papers. His research spans interstellar medium studies, gravitational potential modeling, and Galactic dynamics. He leads a research group at MPIA and collaborates on projects like the Galactic Roman Infrared Plane Survey (GRIPS).
