Gregory Joseph Herschlag is an Associate Research Professor of Mathematics at Duke University, affiliated with the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and the Rhodes Information Initiative. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (2013). His research focuses on developing algorithms to detect gerrymandering, high-performance computing techniques, and computational fluid dynamics. Notable projects include quantifying fairness in redistricting and analyzing GPU performance in complex simulations.
Teaching includes courses such as Probability (MATH/STA 230/730), Differential Equations (MATH 353/753), and Data Science capstone projects (IDS/STA 798). He mentors students on topics like segregated school systems, Bayesian inference in education metrics, and racially polarized voting analysis.
His work has been featured in media outlets, including articles on algorithmic fairness in redistricting and computational methods to audit districting plans. He co-developed Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for redistricting sampling and contributed to studies on GPU optimization for lattice Boltzmann methods.
