Gregory J. Aune

Dr. Gregory J. Aune is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and a tenured faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He holds prestigious positions as the Greehey Distinguished University Chair for Cancer Survivorship in Children and the Stephanie Edlund Distinguished Professor of Pediatric Cancer Research. With over 30 years of experience in pediatric oncology, his research focuses on cardiotoxicity from cancer therapies, cancer survivorship, and social determinants of health. His lab developed a mouse model for anthracycline-induced cardiac toxicity and directs the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute’s Cardiac Function Assessment Shared Resource.

Dr. Aune’s clinical and research leadership includes roles in the South Texas Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Program and national task forces addressing chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity. He is a prominent advocate for childhood cancer, raising over $1 million via St. Baldrick’s Foundation and For the Kids Dance Marathon. Internationally, he addressed the World Health Assembly in 2015, urging global prioritization of childhood cancer. His advocacy includes roles with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, American Childhood Cancer Organization, and St. Baldrick’s National Advocacy Committee.

Dr. Aune’s grants include funding from St. Baldrick’s, Hyundai, and NIH, supporting studies on cardiac MRI in survivors and mechanisms of anthracycline toxicity. His research integrates preclinical models, clinical care, and community engagement to address long-term health consequences of pediatric cancer therapies.
