Gregory Gerbi serves as Assistant Professor of Oceanography at the University of Maine's School of Marine Sciences, based at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, ME. His research focuses on human-interactive ocean zones including coastal regions and the sea surface.
He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Massachusetts Institute of Technology joint program (2008). His work centers on three interconnected domains:
- Wind-wave-current interactions within meters of the sea surface
- Physical dynamics of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem
- Larval and particle transport mechanisms across the continental shelf
Dr. Gerbi's research integrates turbulence, density gradients, and coastal hydrodynamics to address critical questions about ocean-atmosphere exchange and biological connectivity. His laboratory operations are centered at the UMaine Darling Marine Center's Marine Culture Lab facility.
He actively recruits graduate students for physical oceanography research at UMaine, emphasizing field observations and numerical modeling approaches to coastal ocean processes.
