Gregory Clancey

Gregory Clancey serves as Associate Professor in the Department of History at the National University of Singapore (NUS), with a joint appointment in the Science, Technology and Society (STS) Cluster at the Asia Research Institute (ARI). His institutional roles include former Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Chairman of the General Education Steering Committee, and Master of Tembusu College.

He holds a PhD in the Historical and Social Study of Science and Technology from MIT, supplemented by the Fulbright Graduate Scholarship at the University of Tokyo and Lars Hierta Scholarship at Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).

Prof. Clancey's research centers on the cultural interplay between scientific knowledge, technological systems, and societal structures in modern East Asia. His seminal work Earthquake Nation: The Cultural Politics of Japanese Seismicity analyzes how seismic events shaped Japanese national identity and engineering practices, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach bridging history, anthropology, and STS.

His accolades include the Society for the History of Technology's Sidney Edelstein Prize (2007), MIT's Morison Prize (2012) for humanistic impact in science/technology, and recognition on UC Berkeley's Summer Reading List (2009). NUS has honored him with three teaching awards for pedagogical excellence.

As an active member of ARI's STS Cluster, he contributes to collaborative research examining science and technology's evolving role in Asian societies, emphasizing historical context and cultural specificity.
