Gregory A. Worrell, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic, affiliated with the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He holds primary appointments in the Department of Neurology and a joint appointment in the Department of Physiology & Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on epilepsy, seizure prediction, and neuroengineering solutions for neurological disorders.
Education: MD from University of Texas (1996), PhD in Physics (Condensed Matter Theory) from Case Western Reserve University (1987), BS in Physics from Wright State University (1982). Completed residency in Neurology and fellowships in Epilepsy at Mayo Clinic.
Research Interests: Development of next-generation epilepsy management platforms, electrophysiological biomarkers for epileptogenic brain activity, seizure forecasting using EEG, and neurotechnology for brain stimulation. His lab integrates basic science, engineering, and clinical trials to improve patient care.
Professional Highlights: Chair of the Merritt-Putnam Symposium (2015–2018), William L. McKnight-3M Professor in Neuroscience (2024), and recipient of the 2022 Clinical Science Research Award from the American Epilepsy Society.
Awards: Maggie Loeffel Award (2004), Excellence in Teaching Recognition (2000, 1999), and numerous grants from NIH and the National Eye Institute.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Bioelectronics Neurophysiology and Engineering Lab, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to advance epilepsy treatment through neurotechnology and translational research.
