Gregorio Iglesias Rodriguez

Professor Gregorio Iglesias Rodriguez is an Honorary Professor in the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at the University of Plymouth, UK. He previously served as Professor of Coastal Engineering and Head of the COAST Engineering Research Group from 2012. His academic journey includes faculty positions at the University of Santiago de Compostela and the University of A Coruña in Spain, as well as a Visiting Scholar role at the University of Delaware, USA.

His research expertise lies at the intersection of coastal engineering and marine renewable energy. Key areas include ocean renewable energy (wave and tidal energy resource assessment, wave energy converters like WaveCat, hybrid wave-wind systems, and economics), coastal processes (estuarine hydraulics, beach morphodynamics), and coastal/port structures (breakwater design). He pioneered the application of Artificial Intelligence in beach morphology, infragravity waves, oil boom testing, and coastal structure design.

Prof. Iglesias has supervised over 30 postgraduate students and secured over £12 million in research funding as Principal Investigator. He has published more than 100 journal papers and holds an h-index of 31. He is a Subject Editor for the journal Energy (Elsevier) and serves on editorial boards and international review panels, including the EPSRC Peer Review Associate College. He is also involved in international standardization through the IEC and Spanish ROM committees.
