Greg Woolf is the Leon Levy Director and Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Studies at New York University's Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW). His research focuses on the archaeology and history of the Roman Empire and the broader Mediterranean world, encompassing topics such as literacy, ancient knowledge cultures, the Roman economy, religion, environmental history, and mobility in antiquity.
- Previous positions include Ronald J. Mellor Distinguished Professor of Ancient History at UCLA, professor and director of the Institute of Classical Studies at the University of London, and visiting roles at various international institutions.
- He has authored six books, including Becoming Roman: The Origins of Provincial Civilization in Gaul and The Life and Death of Ancient Cities: A Natural History, as well as edited ten works.
His current research explores mobility in the ancient world and prepares lectures for publication. He serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Roman Archaeology.
- Awards and fellowships include fellowships at the British Academy, Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and Society of Antiquaries of London, and membership in the European Academy of Arts and Sciences.
- He held the Sather Professorship at UC Berkeley in 2022 and has held visiting positions worldwide.
Dr. Woolf's interdisciplinary approach spans archaeology, history, and environmental studies, contributing to understanding the dynamics of ancient urbanism, knowledge transmission, and socio-economic systems.
