Dr. Greg J. Strimel is an Associate Professor and Assistant Department Head at Purdue Polytechnic Institute, with a courtesy faculty appointment in Engineering Education. He coordinates the Design & Innovation minor program, emphasizing cross-disciplinary collaboration and active learning environments for pre-service engineering technology educators. His research focuses on enhancing P-12 and post-secondary design education through evidence-based instructional strategies and design cognition studies.
Strimel holds a Ph.D. in Occupational & Technical Studies (Engineering & Technology Education) from Old Dominion University, alongside M.Ed. and B.S. degrees in Technology Education from California University of Pennsylvania. Prior to academia, he served as a high school engineering teacher and U.S. Army Infantry member.
His research interests span P-12 engineering teacher preparation, design-based pedagogy, and STEM career perception studies. Notable work includes frameworks for P-12 engineering literacy and adaptive comparative judgment methodologies for design assessment. Recent studies investigate industry-driven STEM outreach programs' impact on student career perceptions in manufacturing.
Awards include Purdue's 2023 Charles B. Murphy Teaching Award and the 2022 Distinguished Educator designation. His publications explore transdisciplinary learning, dual-credit models, and innovative curriculum designs. Advising focuses on fostering student design capabilities through scaffolded instruction and real-world problem-solving.
Strimel's work extends to polytechnic school models integrating industry/community projects and leveraging adaptive comparative judgment for formative feedback in design education. He collaborates on national initiatives to standardize P-12 engineering education and promote equity in STEM access.
