Greg M Swain is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University's College of Natural Science, with additional appointments in the Neuroscience Program. He serves as Director of the RECR Education Program in the Office of Research and Innovation (2023-present), RECR Education Coordinator at The Graduate School (2019-present), and Director of the NSF REU Site for Cross-Disciplinary Research in Sustainable Chemistry and Chemical Processes (2014-2025). His international affiliations include Visiting Guest Professor at Gdansk University of Technology (2025) and Special Visiting Professor at Keio University (2023).
Dr. Swain's research spans neuroanalytical chemistry, electrochemical sensor development, and materials science. His laboratory focuses on carbon microelectrodes (particularly boron-doped diamond), chemical and biochemical sensors, and electrochemical methods to study neuromuscular signaling in the gastrointestinal tract. Current research projects include diamond microelectrode fabrication for neurochemical analysis, point-of-care diagnostics for human and animal respiratory diseases, and corrosion studies of additively manufactured metal alloys. His group employs interdisciplinary approaches combining electrochemistry, material science, and physiological studies.
Analysis of Dr. Swain's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on developing boron-doped diamond-based electrochemical sensors for biomedical and environmental applications. His work bridges fundamental electrochemistry with practical applications in neurochemical monitoring, respiratory disease diagnostics, and corrosion science. The research demonstrates consistent innovation in electrode materials, surface modification techniques, and analytical methodologies across multiple disciplines.
