Greg Hermann is a Professor of Biology at Lewis & Clark College, specializing in developmental biology and cellular mechanisms of organogenesis. His research focuses on lysosome-related organelle biogenesis using the Caenorhabditis elegans model organism. He holds a PhD from the University of Utah and a BS from Gonzaga University. Dr. Hermann has served as Chair of the Biology Department and the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Program. His work has been supported by grants from the NIH, NSF, and the Murdock Charitable Trust.
Research Interests: Dr. Hermann investigates how specialized organelles form during development, particularly in the C. elegans intestine. His lab studies molecular and genetic pathways controlling lysosome-related organelle biogenesis, with implications for human diseases associated with organelle dysfunction. Techniques used include genetic analysis, microscopy, and biochemical approaches.
Teaching: He teaches courses in Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, and oversees undergraduate research. His pedagogical philosophy emphasizes active learning and inquiry-driven education. Dr. Hermann has mentored numerous undergraduates in research, earning the Council on Undergraduate Research's Outstanding Biology Mentor Award (2012).
Professional Contributions: He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications, delivered invited seminars at institutions like Colorado State University and the University of Washington, and secured multiple grants. His work includes landmark studies on the roles of Rab GTPases, the HOPS complex, and ABC transporters in organelle formation.
