Grazieli Maboni is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, and Section Head of Microbiology and Molecular Biology at the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. She holds a DVM from the Federal University of Santa Maria (Brazil), a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Nottingham (UK), and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists in both Virology (2020) and Bacteriology/Mycology (2019). Her research focuses on advancing diagnostics for veterinary infectious diseases, including genomic tools, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, and pathogen discovery. She has taught courses in bacteriology, virology, and clinical microbiology at the University of Guelph and the University of Georgia.
- Education: DVM (2012), MSc Microbiology (2013) – Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil; PhD Microbiology (2017) – University of Nottingham, UK; Clinical Microbiology Residency (2020) – University of Georgia.
- Research Interests: Next-generation sequencing in clinical diagnostics, genomic epidemiology, and precision medicine in veterinary microbiology.
Her scientific contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed publications on bacterial and fungal pathogen genomics, antimicrobial resistance, and diagnostic methodologies. She has led grants from the OVC Pet Trust and the American Kennel Club-Canine Health Foundation to study Mycoplasma spp. and bacterial genomic markers of resistance.
- Awards: FHEA (2015) from the Higher Education Academy, UK; ACVM Diplomate certifications (2019/2020).
Maboni advises graduate students in molecular pathogenesis and bacterial genomics, and collaborates with the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the Ontario Veterinary College. Her work bridges clinical diagnostics, research, and education to address global animal health challenges.
