Grant Ferguson holds the Saskatchewan Centennial Enhancement Chair and is a Professor in the Department of Civil Geological and Environmental Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. His research focuses on engineering geology, geothermal energy, groundwater modeling, and subsurface fluid dynamics. Dr. Ferguson’s work integrates hydrogeochemistry, heat transport mechanisms, and paleohydrology to address challenges in sustainable resource management and climate adaptation. He has conducted extensive studies in the Colorado Plateau, Paradox Basin, and Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understand deep subsurface systems.
Education: B.Sc. in Engineering from the University of Waterloo and Ph.D. in Geological Engineering from the University of Manitoba. His expertise spans environmental tracers, fluid-rock interactions, and the impacts of human activities on groundwater systems. Recent research highlights include studies on Anthropocene-driven subsurface changes, geothermal energy potential, and the sustainability of ancient groundwater use.
Research interests include deep groundwater circulation, microbial activity in fractured systems, and the application of noble gas isotopes for groundwater dating. Dr. Ferguson’s work bridges geological, hydrological, and engineering disciplines to address global water security and energy transition challenges.
