Graham Hatfull serves as the Eberly Family Professor of Biotechnology and HHMI Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, where he leads the Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program.
His research centers on bacteriophage genomics and evolution, with specific expertise in Mycobacterium smegmatis and Rhodococcus erythropolis phage systems. He has pioneered undergraduate curricula integrating hands-on phage discovery and genomic analysis, directly engaging students in authentic research experiences that bridge microbiology and bioinformatics.
His most significant recognition is the HHMI Professor award, which supports his innovative science education initiatives.
Professor Hatfull actively mentors undergraduate researchers through multiple course sections annually, including BioSc 0058 (phage discovery) and BioSc 0068 (phage genomics). During Fall 2014 alone, he co-instructed five BioSc 0058 sections and one BioSc 0068 section, each enrolling 16-18 freshmen in 4-hour/week laboratory and lecture formats using in situ and in silico methodologies.
