Graeme Milligan is the Gardiner Professor of Biochemistry and Deputy Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on the function, structure, and regulation of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), with emphasis on translating discoveries into drug development. He co-founded Caldan Therapeutics (for metabolic diseases) and Keltic Pharma Therapeutics (for malaria treatments).
Education: B.Sc. in Biochemistry (First Class Honors) from the University of Birmingham (1979), Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham (1982), and Fogarty International Fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health, USA (1982-1985).
Research interests center on GPCR pharmacology, including receptor oligomerization, signaling bias, and ligand discovery for metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Recent work explores receptors like FFA2, FFA4, GPR35, and GPR84 using chemogenetic and structural approaches.
Publication trends (2015-2025) highlight GPCR structure-function studies, drug discovery for metabolic/inflammatory disorders, and innovative methods like spatial intensity distribution analysis. Key themes include allosteric modulation, biased signaling, and receptor phosphorylation.
Awards and Fellowships:
- Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE, 1998)
- Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMEdSci, 2016)
- Poulsson Medal (1998), Ariens Medal (2006), JR Vane Medal (2016)
He leads the Centre for Translational Pharmacology and advises multiple PhD students. Research is supported by major grants focusing on GPCR mechanisms and therapeutic targeting.
