Professor Graeme Acheson is a Professor of Finance and Head of the Accounting and Finance Department at the University of Strathclyde's Strathclyde Business School. He holds a PhD in Finance from Queen’s University Belfast (2006) and has previously held academic positions at Queen’s University Belfast, The University of Ulster, and the University of Stirling.
His research focuses on applying econometric techniques to historical contexts, particularly examining how legal frameworks in 19th-century Britain influenced investor behavior and corporate governance. Notable projects include analyzing the impact of the City of Glasgow Bank failure (1878) and investigating the evolution of corporate law. His work is funded by organizations like The Leverhulme Trust and The British Academy.
Recent publications explore topics such as partnerships in 19th-century Glasgow, bubble companies like the London Assurance (1720), and gender dynamics in Victorian railway investment. He actively participates in academic conferences, including the World Economic History Congress and the Association of Business Historians.
Awards and grants include the British Academy Transfer Grant (2019–2022) and the Leverhulme Trust-funded project on Glasgow's entrepreneurs (2021–2024). His research bridges historical financial practices with modern legal and economic frameworks, emphasizing the role of private contracting in shareholder protection.
