Gill Newton is a Visiting Research Affiliate at the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure (CAMPOP) and currently collaborates with the University of Strathclyde Business School. Her research leverages large-scale historical datasets to analyze demographic and economic behaviors across UK regions, focusing on micro-geographical and regional patterns from early modern to 19th-century contexts.
Research Focus:
Newton specializes in reconstructing historical population dynamics through record linkage techniques. Her work spans:
- Demographic shifts in early modern London, including disease environments and marriage patterns.
- Economic behaviors such as entrepreneurship, occupational structures, and Poor Law expenditures.
- Regional UK analyses, notably 19th-century Glasgow entrepreneurs and institutional populations.
Publication Trends:
Her 15 publications (2011–2021) emphasize quantitative history, with recurrent themes in:
- Historical demography methods (family reconstitution, census linkage).
- Socioeconomic studies (entrepreneurship, labor, welfare systems).
- Urban health in early modern England (mortality, disease, infant care).
Funding and Collaboration:
She leads a Leverhulme Trust-funded project on 19th-century Glasgow entrepreneurs at Strathclyde, directed by Prof. Graeme Acheson. Newton also contributes to legacy data revitalization at CAMPOP, enhancing accessibility to historical UK datasets.
