Grace S. Fong is Professor of Chinese Literature in the Department of East Asian Studies at McGill University. Her research focuses on classical Chinese poetry and poetics, women writers of Ming and Qing China, and autobiographical practices in the Chinese literary tradition. She has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship (2011–2012) and the Choice Outstanding Academic Title (2008) for her groundbreaking work on gender and writing in late imperial China.
Dr. Fong has engaged in significant digital humanities projects, including directing the Ming Qing Women’s Writings digital archive and database since 2003. Her current project, The Filiality of Daughters in China: A Genealogical Study, leverages digitized local gazetteers and digital tools at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science to explore temporal and spatial dimensions of filiality. She has also held visiting positions at the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Her editorial work includes the Women and Gender in China Studies series published by Brill. Notably, her book Herself an Author examines gender, agency, and writing in late imperial China, earning critical acclaim. Dr. Fong’s scholarly activities extend to international presentations, including lectures at Smith College, University of California, Santa Barbara, and institutions in Hong Kong.
