Gowri Vijayakumar is Associate Professor of Sociology and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University. Her research employs feminist and transnational frameworks to analyze social movements, state policies, and globalization's impact on sexual politics. Her award-winning book At Risk: Indian Sexual Politics and the Global AIDS Crisis (2021) examines how sex worker and LGBTQ activism transformed India's HIV response through engagements with donors, states, and biomedical institutions.
Vijayakumar's work investigates the intersections of labor, sexuality, and crisis response, with ongoing projects on sex work/aging and COVID-19's impact on HIV communities in India. Her teaching covers social movements, gender/sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and sociology of love.
