Gottfried Schatz

Gottfried Schatz was a renowned Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry, Biozentrum, University of Basel (emeritus since 2000). He held leadership roles including Chairman of Biozentrum (1983–1985) and President of the Swiss Science and Technology Council (2000–2003). His academic journey began with a PhD from the University of Graz (1961), followed by roles at the University of Vienna (1961–1968) and Cornell University (1968–1974).

His research focused on mitochondrial bio-genesis, oxidative phosphorylation mechanisms, and protein transport into mitochondria. He contributed to foundational work in biochemistry and molecular biology, with over 50 years of academic leadership. Awards include the Wilson Medal (2000) and the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize (2004).

He served on numerous international scientific councils, including the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), and held advisory roles at institutions like the Max Planck Society and the Institut Pasteur. His legacy includes pioneering studies in mitochondrial biology and impactful contributions to global scientific policy.
