Gottfried Hagen is a Professor of Turkish Studies in the Department of Middle East Studies at the University of Michigan. He serves as Interim Chair of the Department and holds affiliations with multiple centers, including the Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies, the Global Islamic Studies Center, and the Center for Armenian Studies (2022–2025). His expertise spans Ottoman cultural history, Islamicate studies, and the analysis of Ottoman narratives on space, time, and religion.
Education: Ph.D. in Turkish Studies (Freie Universität Berlin, 1996); M.A. in Islamic Studies (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, 1989). Fluent in Turkish, German, and English, with proficiency in multiple classical and modern languages.
Research focuses on Ottoman intellectual and cultural production, particularly geographical writing, hagiography, and narratives of the Prophet Muhammad. Key works include Ein osmanischer Geograph bei der Arbeit (2003) and co-editing An Ottoman Cosmography (2021). Current projects involve Ottoman Islamic religiosity and Prophet narratives.
Notable contributions include studies on Ottoman historiography, the role of Islam in cosmology, and Ottoman translations. His work bridges historical analysis with cultural and literary studies, emphasizing the interplay between religion, power, and knowledge.
He teaches courses on Ottoman language, cultural history, and Islamicate studies, integrating interdisciplinary approaches to historical and textual analysis.
