Shapiro's groundbreaking dissertation, The Great Armenian Flight, reconstructs 17th-century Armenian migration through archival research and fieldwork, uncovering abandoned monasteries and other physical evidence. His work expands traditional narratives of the 'Islamic World' and 'Near East' by incorporating overlooked Christian societies and broader geographical contexts.
He has been recognized with the prestigious Jacobus Fellowship, Princeton's highest graduate student honor. Shapiro is proficient in Armenian, Greek, Persian, and Turkish, and aims to reshape how students understand the interconnected histories of the Balkans, Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
