Gosia Goclowska is a Lecturer in Social Psychology at the University of Bath, where she serves as Principal Investigator of the Open Mind Lab. She is affiliated with the Department of Psychology and the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human, actively accepting doctoral students interested in her research areas.
Dr. Goclowska earned her MA from the University of Warsaw (2007, magna cum laude) and her PhD from the University of Kent (2011). Her academic journey includes prestigious Marie-Curie Fellowships at the University of Amsterdam (2012-2017) and the University of Rochester (2014-2016) before joining the University of Bath in September 2017. She previously served as Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Kent (2010-2012) and as Associate Editor at the Journal of Applied Social Psychology (2017-2019).
Her research focuses on epistemic emotions, particularly awe, curiosity, interest, surprise, boredom, and confusion. She investigates their commonalities and differences, 'flavours,' and downstream consequences for social psychology. Her work spans multiple domains including creativity, cultural diversity, values, attitudes, and openness. The Open Mind Lab employs diverse methodologies including surveys, experiments, field studies (such as collaborations with the Cambridge Science Center), and Virtual Reality environments to explore how these emotions shape human cognition and social behavior.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on the nuanced understanding of awe and its relationship with immeasurability, social values, and attitude change. Her work increasingly incorporates technology, particularly VR, to study emotional experiences in controlled yet immersive settings. She has also expanded into applied research areas including science education and sustainable transportation.
Dr. Goclowska's significant contributions have been recognized with:
- Marie-Curie Intra-European Fellowship (2012-2014)
- Marie-Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (2014-2017)
She actively supervises doctoral students and junior researchers including Bihui Jin, Ece Tunc, Alessandro Magnoni, and Ruth Gibson. Her research is supported by multiple grants including an ESRC IAA project on 'Helping Science Centres Assess and Promote Positive Emotions and Attitudes towards STEM' (2024-2025), a VR project on 'Can VR augment the experience and benefits of awe?' (2023), and work on 'Awe and Attitude Change' (2023).
Dr. Goclowska leads the Open Mind Lab, which conducts cutting-edge research on emotions in the awe family (awe, admiration, elevation) and epistemic emotions. Current projects explore awe's relationship with social values, immeasurability, political speeches, science center events, e-bike trials, and VR experiences, demonstrating the lab's commitment to both theoretical advancement and practical applications of emotion science.
