Gordon J. Freeman is Professor of Medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. He earned his PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Harvard University and is renowned for discovering the PD-L1 and PD-L2 proteins that modulate immune responses through PD-1 binding.
His groundbreaking work demonstrated that tumors overexpress PD-L1 to evade immune detection, directly leading to the development of PD-1/PD-L1 blockade immunotherapies that have revolutionized cancer treatment. These therapies are now FDA-approved for over 25 cancer types, significantly improving survival rates.
Freeman has published over 400 scientific papers and holds 90+ US patents. His honors include:
- Election to National Academy of Sciences (2022)
- Hamburg Award for Advances in Biomedical Research (2024)
- AACR-CRI Lloyd J. Old Award (2024)
- William B. Coley Award for tumor immunology research
