Dr Gordon Cowell serves as an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in the School of Cancer Sciences at the University of Glasgow and works as a consultant radiologist with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. His clinical responsibilities are split between Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and New Victoria Hospital in Glasgow, with specialized expertise in thoracic, haematological and MR imaging since his appointment as a consultant radiologist in 2012.
Dr Cowell's research program focuses on:
- Thoracic and pleural imaging methodologies
- Pleural malignancy diagnostics and assessment
- Thoracic MRI applications in cancer
- Development of imaging biomarkers for prognostic evaluation
- AI applications in tumor volume measurement
His recent publication record (2020-2024) reveals a concentrated research trajectory in pleural mesothelioma imaging, featuring innovative work in:
- Automated volumetric measurement using deep learning AI
- Comparative analysis of MRI versus CT in tumor assessment
- Integration of body composition metrics (sarcopenia, adipopenia) with cancer prognosis
- Validation of modified RECIST criteria for treatment response
- Development of staging protocols for lung cancer with minimal pleural effusion
Dr Cowell has been instrumental in the STRATIFY study, a multicenter investigation examining thoracoscopic staging techniques for potentially curable lung cancer cases with minimal pleural involvement. His scholarly contributions bridge clinical radiology practice with oncological research, particularly in thoracic malignancies, with publications spanning high-impact journals including Thorax, Lung Cancer, and Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
