Gordon Cates is the Jesse W. Beams Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia, where he is a faculty member in the Department of Physics within the School of Arts & Sciences. His research spans atomic, nuclear, and medical physics, with a focus on spin polarization techniques using optical pumping and laser-based methods.
His research interests include:
- Experimental Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics
- Experimental Medical Physics, particularly hyperpolarized gas MRI for lung imaging
- Experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics, including neutron spin structure and parity violation
- Fundamental tests of the Standard Model and hadronic structure
His recent publications highlight work on neutron skin measurement, strange quark contributions in the proton, and spin asymmetries in deep inelastic scattering—largely conducted at national laboratories such as Jefferson Lab and SLAC. These studies contribute to foundational knowledge in quantum chromodynamics and nuclear structure.
