Gordon Barrett is a Research Fellow at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) at The University of Manchester. His research focuses on the history of science diplomacy, Cold War international relations, and Chinese scientific engagements. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Bristol, preceded by a Master of Philosophy in Modern Chinese Studies from Oxford University and a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary global issues.
Barrett’s research explores how science and diplomacy intersect, particularly in Cold War contexts. Key areas include China’s scientific collaborations, the role of non-state actors in international science, and the legacy of figures like Joseph Needham. His 2022 book *China's Cold War Science Diplomacy* examines Sino-Western scientific exchanges during the Cold War. Recent articles address decolonizing science diplomacy narratives and the role of Asian countries in global scientific networks.
Barrett has received awards including Fellowships from the Higher Education Academy (2023) and Royal Historical Society (2022). He collaborates internationally, including through the SPRINT University of Manchester / FAPESP Joint Research Scheme. His work appears in journals like *British Journal for the History of Science* and edited volumes on East-West relations.
He is affiliated with CHSTM and actively involved in science diplomacy discourse, contributing to public debates via blogs. Current projects include studying post-war UNESCO engagements and the evolution of science diplomacy in Asia.
