Gonzalo Rubio is an Associate Professor of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies and History at The Pennsylvania State University. He holds affiliations with the College of the Liberal Arts and serves as a Senior Fellow at New York University's Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW). His primary expertise lies in the languages (Sumerian and Akkadian) and civilizations of Ancient Mesopotamia, with research focusing on Sumerian grammar, comparative Semitics, and Mesopotamian literary traditions. Educated at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Licentiate, 1992-93) and The Johns Hopkins University (MA 1997, PhD 1999), Rubio has received prestigious awards including a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship (2012-13) for his work on Early Dynastic Semitic literature.
Dr. Rubio’s academic leadership includes roles as President of the International Association for Comparative Semitics and editor-in-chief of multiple scholarly series. His teaching spans Sumerian, Akkadian, and Hittite languages, alongside courses on ancient Mediterranean history and comparative writing systems. He is currently coordinating a major De Gruyter handbook on Mesopotamian studies and has published extensively on cuneiform literature, Semitic linguistics, and ancient Near Eastern cultural history.
