Gonul Colak is a Professor of Finance at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, Finland. He has held academic positions at Florida State University and Wichita State University, and has been a visiting scholar at Stern School of Business at New York University and at Turkish Central Bank's Istanbul School of Central Banking. His research has been published in top finance journals including Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
Dr. Colak received his Doctor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) from the University of Iowa in 2004, with a focus on Business Economics. His educational background also includes a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Iowa (2001) and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University in Turkey (1998).
Professor Colak's research primarily focuses on political uncertainty, corporate finance, and financial econometrics. His work spans a wide range of topics including equity issuance, investor relations, corporate restructurings, financial intermediation, executive compensation, S&P 500 Index additions, capital structure, and cash holdings. His recent work has increasingly focused on Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) issues, as evidenced by his Climate Finance Award at the 7th Liechtenstein Workshop of Sustainable Finance in 2023. His research employs sophisticated econometric techniques to analyze complex financial phenomena, often connecting political events with market outcomes.

His current externally funded projects include 'Insider Trading around Environmental, Social, and Governance Scandals' and 'Modeling the Structure and Dynamics of Energy, Commodity and Alternative Asset Prices.'
Professor Colak is an active member of the finance research community, serving as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Financial Stability since 2019. He regularly participates in conferences including the Southern Finance Association Conference and contributes to academic discourse through peer review activities for journals such as Journal of Financial Intermediation and Journal of Banking & Finance.
