Gongchen Sun

Gongchen Sun serves as an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering departments at the Margie and Bill Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where his research centers on non-equilibrium interfacial transport phenomena at micro and nano scales using microfluidics as the primary experimental platform.

His academic credentials include:

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering (Microelectronics) from Peking University, China
• Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Notre Dame
• Postdoctoral Fellowship at the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology

Dr. Sun's research program investigates electrokinetic ion transport through ion exchange membranes, interfacial transport of biological microparticles across phase boundaries, and emergent pattern formation by biological active colloids. These fundamental studies drive technological innovations in cell separation, tissue regeneration, environmental water management systems, and advanced 3D printing methodologies. His work bridges engineering with interdisciplinary collaborations, notably the 'From Quill to Print' project integrating Shakespeare/Dante humanities with 3D printing to create experiential learning frameworks between engineering and liberal arts students.

The Gongchen Sun Lab at UTSA develops microfluidic-ionic circuits and multiphase microfluidic platforms for biological applications while pioneering educational initiatives that transform traditional engineering pedagogy through hands-on, cross-disciplinary project execution.
