Glenn Standring is a Lecturer in the English department at the University of Canterbury's Faculty of Arts, with his appointment beginning February 3, 2025. He brings extensive industry experience to his academic role, having established himself as a prominent New Zealand screenwriter, director, and producer with significant contributions to both local and international film and television productions.
His educational background includes a BA (Hons) first class from the University of Otago (1980-1985) and a BFA in Film from the University of Canterbury (1991-1994).
Standring's research interests focus on stories from the early 19th century in New Zealand (referred to as 'this whenua' in Māori) and explorations of genre in international and local contexts. His work bridges academic study with practical filmmaking experience, particularly in indigenous storytelling and genre filmmaking.
As an academic with significant industry experience, Standring contributes a unique perspective to the study of narrative, connecting theoretical frameworks with practical application in creative media production.

- Creator and writer of The Dead Lands, an 8-part horror/fantasy limited series for AMC/Shudder with TVNZ
- Writer, Executive Producer and Second Unit Director on the Netflix Original 6 Days
- Writer on the McLaren documentary about Formula 1 driver Bruce McLaren
- Writer and producer on the te reo Māori action film The Dead Lands
- Director of feature films including The Irrefrutable Truth About Demons and Perfect Creature for 20th Century Fox
Standring has Māori heritage, whakapapa to the Hokianga, with Ngā Puhi as his iwi and Te Popoto as his hapu, as well as Scottish and English heritage from Glasgow and Manchester.
