Glenn Matlack is a Professor in the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology at Ohio University's College of Arts and Sciences. He is affiliated with the Ohio Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Studies (OCEES) and conducts research focused on Eastern Deciduous Forest Ecology. His work spans plant population biology, urban forestry, land use legacies, and plant invasions. He teaches courses such as Plant Population Biology and Tropical Ecology and has received the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award in 2008.
Research Interests: His research investigates long-term impacts of land use on forest ecosystems, particularly in southeastern Ohio. He studies how historical agriculture, urbanization, and invasive species influence forest structure and community assembly. His work on roadside trees examines microclimate and pavement interactions, while his modeling studies explore plant mobility and habitat dynamics. He also focuses on clonal growth, seed dispersal by animals, and the role of disturbance in shaping forest herb communities.
Publication Trends: His recent publications (2016–2023) show a strong focus on the legacy of human land use, urban forest impacts, seed dispersal mechanisms, and invasive species dynamics. These works appear in high-impact journals like Journal of Ecology, Landscape Ecology, and Urban Ecosystems, reflecting a consistent and influential research trajectory in temperate forest ecology.
Scientific Awards:
- College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award, 2008
Advising and Grants: While specific student names are not listed, he has supervised numerous student research projects on topics including roadside tree microclimate, urban forests, plant invasions, and land use impacts. He has secured funding for research, including a report for the Ohio Department of Transportation on trees and pavement. He has also contributed to biodiversity planning for the Wayne National Forest.
Professional Engagement: He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Ecology and has been active in departmental and college-level service, including as Department Promotion and Tenure Chair and Faculty Senator. His work bridges academic research and practical ecological management.
