Professor Glenn Lyons serves as the Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol, bridging academic and professional transport sectors. He holds a BEng (hons) and PhD, with honorary titles including FCIHT and TPP (hon). Previously Professor of Transport and Society (2002-2017), he founded UWE's Centre for Transport & Society and served as Associate Dean (2010-2017). His work focuses on leveraging new technologies to influence travel behavior and societal practices within the climate emergency context.
Glenn's professional roles include secondments at Mott MacDonald and the New Zealand Ministry of Transport, where he developed the FUTURES strategic planning framework. He has held leadership positions in transport organizations such as the Transport Planning Society, Universities Transport Study Group, and Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT), including being CIHT Vice President (2023) and President (2024/25). Notable awards include the 2022 CIHT Institution Award.
His research expertise spans transport decarbonisation, ICT impacts on mobility, traveler information systems, and handling uncertainty in policy. He pioneered vision-led planning methodologies and has advised UK government bodies like the Department for Transport and the Wales Roads Review Panel. Glenn also emphasizes neurodiversity inclusion in transport sectors and has contributed to global initiatives through his dual academic-industry role.
