Glenn Burton was a distinguished Professor at the University of Georgia’s Tifton campus, affiliated with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Over a 60-year career, he became a global leader in agricultural science, revolutionizing plant genetics, crop improvement, and forage grass development. His work addressed both food security and environmental needs, creating high-yield crop varieties and turf grasses used worldwide.
Education: Born in Clatonia, Nebraska, Burton earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska (1932), followed by master’s (1933) and doctoral (1936) degrees in agronomy from Rutgers University.
Research Interests: Burton pioneered plant breeding for food security, developing pearl millet hybrids that alleviated famine in India, and transformed invasive Bermuda grass into high-quality forage and turf varieties (e.g., ‘Tifton 85’). His innovations in golf course turf and agricultural sustainability remain industry standards.
Awards: He received the National Medal of Science (1983) from President Ronald Reagan for contributions to food security, environmental stewardship, and recreation.
Advising & Legacy: Though specific student names are unlisted, Burton mentored researchers globally and established the Glenn and Helen Burton Feeding the Hungry Scholarship for doctoral students in food crop research. His Tifton-based laboratory became a hub for agricultural innovation, addressing challenges in forage production and crop resilience.
