Glenn Burger is a Distinguished Professor of English and Medieval Studies at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY), with additional affiliation at the CUNY Graduate Center. He holds a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford. His research bridges medieval literature (particularly Chaucer), queer theory, gender/sexuality studies, and affect theory, with recent focus on emotion in Chaucer's works and household knowledge in late medieval England and France.
His research explores:
- Medieval gender/sexuality through queer and feminist frameworks
- Affect and emotion in Chaucerian narratives
- Postcolonial approaches to medieval East-West relations
- Conduct literature and household management
- Global Middle Ages and transcultural exchanges
Publications predominantly analyze Chaucer's works through contemporary theoretical lenses, with consistent focus on gender construction, emotional narratives, and cultural transmission. Recent work (2017-2021) shows intensified focus on affect theory and household knowledge systems.
He received a prestigious CNRS grant supporting international research on 'Norms of Life.' Actively advises MA students specializing in medieval literature, gender/sexuality, and affect studies. Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including 'Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales,' 'Medieval Affect, Feeling and Emotion,' and 'Women, Rape Culture and Masculinity in the Canterbury Tales.'
