Giuseppe Perale is an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), and heads the Neuroregeneration Laboratory (NRLab) established in 2022. He is also a permanent visiting professor at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology in Vienna. His research focuses on regenerative medicine, biomaterials, spinal cord injury repair, and bone regeneration. He holds a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering (Politecnico di Milano, 2002) and a PhD in Industrial Bioengineering (Politecnico di Milano, 2006).
Research Interests:
- Development of resorbable biomaterials (hydrogels, biopolymers)
- Controlled drug delivery systems
- Stem cell-based therapies
- Mathematical modeling for medical applications
- Translation of lab innovations to clinical settings
Lab Activities: The NRLab pioneers multidisciplinary approaches combining nanofabrication, bioengineering, and neurobiology to develop therapies for spinal cord injury. Key innovations include tunable hydrogel systems and nanoparticle drug delivery platforms. Collaborations include the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute, ZHAW, and the Mario Negri Institute.
Advising: Supervises PhD students Valeria Veneruso and Zoe Giorgi, and Master student Francesca Palermo. The lab team includes researchers from multiple disciplines.
Labs/Teams: Lead of the NRLab at USI’s Euler Institute, part of Swiss BioTechNet and Nano.Swiss platforms. Active in GLP-compliant scaling of regenerative therapies.
