Dr. Giulio Del Zanna is a Senior Research Associate at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), University of Cambridge, specializing in Atomic Astrophysics. His research focuses on energy transfer processes in the solar corona, plasma diagnostics via XUV spectroscopy, and atomic data development for astrophysical applications. He has contributed to major projects like the CHIANTI atomic database and the UK APAP network.
Research Interests:
- Energy transfer mechanisms in solar coronal plasma
- Atomic data calculations for astrophysical plasmas
- Solar EUV irradiance variability
- Instrument calibration (e.g., Hinode/EIS)
Scientific Awards:
- STFC Advanced Fellowship (2008–2012)
- PPARC/STFC Advanced Fellowship (2007–2008)
Advising & Grants: Co-investigator on projects like the Marshall Grazing Incidence X-ray Spectrometer (MaGIXS) and the Solar Orbiter mission’s SPICE instrument. Active contributor to the CHIANTI database development and VAMDC network.
Labs/Teams: Member of DAMTP’s Atomic Astrophysics research group, collaborating with international teams on solar physics instrumentation and data analysis.
